Welcome

Welcome to the September  Newsletter. This September is National Oral Health Month as well being  our first birthday in our new home, so to celebrate we have a very special offer available for readers of our newsletter, read on to find out more. The team are planning to celebrate a year since opening by taking on the climbing wall at Ratho. Assuming we all survive the experience we hope to see you in the practice some time soon.

This months newsletter  has a short  article on preventing  sports related dental injuries and Dr Booth gets on his soap box ( fruit and veg box actually) with a few timely tips.

Enjoy !

Its our First Birthday!

It's our first birthday in our new home at the Craigentinny Dental Health Centre so we would like to give you something to smile about: for one month only we have negotiated a significant reduction in the cost of our home tooth whitening treatment  and will be offering the equivalent of one discounted treatment for every day of this month. That's 30 kits or 30 brighter smiles with 30% off. If you thought there was nothing to smile about at the end of the holidays then think again....

If you would like to know more, give us a call or e-mail the practice below.

Are the sporty members of your family protected?

By the age of  16 many children are likely to have suffered an injury to their teeth resulting in permanent damage. Twenty percent of these injuries occur during organised sport.  Almost all of these  injuries could be avoided with the use of a sports mouth guard. Adults are not immune to dental injuries while playing sport either.

A sports guard is basically a crash hat for teeth. It is made of an elastic material that absorbs and dissipates energy when hit. This means that when a ball, elbow or anything else for that matter, hits your sports guard the force of the blow is absorbed and  force of the impact is spread over a wider area. As well as protecting the teeth against direct injury they also stop teeth from clashing together when the lower jaw is hit. This type of blow is just as likely to  causes pieces of tooth to break or chip in the unprotected mouth as a direct blow from a hard object.  Research has also shown that sports guards can help to reduce the risk of concussion and other more serious injuries.

Not all sports guards are the same.  Sports guards that you buy in the shops to boil in water then bite into are not as good at protecting your teeth because when you bite into them you thin the sports guard in the critical areas where you want most protection. They also tend to be bulky and are not well retained in the mouth. Although not ideal they are better than nothing. Custom made mouth guards provide a  better fit making them more comfortable to wear and less obtrusive during sport.

The Australian Dental Journal published a research paper which concluded   "the custom made mouth guard is fabricated over a model of the wearers teeth. They are acknowledged as providing the highest level of protection and greatest comfort."

At this time of year many schools organise visits from companies that specialise in making mouth guards. These companies provide a convenient service and also produce mouth guards that are appropriate for children and effective.

It is always a difficult decision as to when a sports guard should be worn for the first time. The baby teeth sit very close to the developing adult teeth so a knock or a bump to a baby tooth can cause damage to the adult tooth underneath. For this reason it is advisable to have children wear mouth guards as soon as they start to play any contact sport. While a custom made mouth guard is the ideal standard a boil and bite type mouth guard is better than no protection at all. As children grow and become heavier they have more momentum while playing sport at this point a well made mouth guard becomes a necessity to ensure proper protection of the teeth and jaws.

At the practice we are able to make mouth guards at very competitive rates. A sports guard made to fit will provide increased protection against injury and can last for several seasons.  Our team are also on hand to provide  aftercare including any adjustments necessary throughout the season as your child grows.

Finally if the worst happens and any member of your family sustains a knock or blow to the teeth please do contact us to have things checked out at the first opportunity.

5 Portions A Day

As we rapidly approach the end of the summer holidays the gardeners amongst you will soon be harvesting your end of season fruit and veg (which means in the Craigentinny Dental Health Centre a bagful of crab apples) and so with that tenuous link, and at the start of oral health month, it would be a good idea to extol everyone again to have “five portions a day”. That’s right, the advice to have five portions of fruit and veg a day doesn’t stop at your doctor’s door but your dental team get on the soapbox too!

The vitamins and minerals and other zesty ingredients within fresh fruit and vegetables are vital for your well-being and have a protective affect against many forms of cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and bowel problems. In conjunction with other “lifestyle” changes: stopping smoking, drinking in moderation and regular (but not necessarily strenuous) exercise you really can greatly protect yourself from these common diseases. By increasing your intake of fruit and vegetables and substituting these for processed or fatty foods you can also keep your summer figure in trim…….until Christmas at least.

It’s important to spread out your 5 portions (minimum!) throughout the day and to vary what you eat, and remember fruit juices only count as one portion. Try not to rely too heavily on fruit and in particular citrus fruits unless you want to end up full of vim and vigour but with no teeth because you have dissolved them away with strong fruit acids. Beware also of dried fruits which have very high sugar levels.

And if you’re looking for the dentistry in this piece then fruit and veg can help protect against the following: mouth cancer, tooth decay (if you have fruit and veg instead of your sweetened/processed treats), gum disease, periodontal disease, mouth ulcers, mouth sores and cracks in your lips and at the corners of your mouth.

For more information on the role of nutrition in keeping a healthy mouth then please ask one of our team at your next visit.

  And Finally................

Well that's is for this newsletter we hope you enjoyed it. Please feel free to forward this newsletter to anyone who you think may find it of interest. Do let us know your thoughts on any of the above items too. Thanks  for your continued support and encouragement.

Kind regards
