Blood Pressure- Is it a dental problem?

We know the mere thought of dentistry raises blood pressures for many people although hopefully none of our patients! There is however a more serious side to  blood pressure that is raised even when a trip to the dentist is not involved.

The aim of the Dental health Centre is to work with you  to pro actively identify and manage diseases of the mouth or general health issues  that may affect your  mouth. One area which we have given much consideration to recently is that of Blood Pressure. You  may  routinely have this checked by your own doctor however there is a greater number of patients who never have this checked at all. Raised blood pressure is a risk factor in strokes and many other conditions including heart disease, it is increasingly being detected in younger patients. Gum disease is also a  risk factor in the development of heart disease. Recent research suggests that the bacteria that are present in our mouths may have a role in the development of these serious conditions.

The blood pressure association recommends that we all check our blood pressure once per year. Many people do not see their doctors annually so the practice is an ideal setting to provide this service. Taking your blood pressure takes only moments and is done with a small wrist monitor.   We have consulted widely with our local medical colleagues who have provided us with a lot of valuable feedback and assistance in designing this service. All of the local medical practices have agreed to provide further investigation for any of their patients where we detect  blood pressure that is significantly increased over normal levels.

We hope that you will welcome this as a valuable addition to the care that we provide. Please feel free to let us know your thoughts in person or by e-mail.

Campaign 18-Zero

Our 18-Zero Campaign is a challenge that we have set for our patients, ourselves and the local community. The aim is to help all of our child patients reach the age of 18 with no decay, fillings or missing teeth. For any children who may already have experienced decay the goal is to help  prevent any new decay and further fillings or missing teeth.

We believe passionately in the benefits of preventive dentistry. For children this ideally will start at a very early age. Our team work with our patients each day to promote dental health and provide parents and carers with the information and tools that they need to look after the younger members of their family. Our hope that this will provide a good foundation for lifelong dental health. John and Fraser have recently produced a booklet entitled the "Guide to children's dental health 0-4 years"  which is freely  available in the practice. If you would like a priority copy today or  know of anyone who you think would like a copy please follow this link.

Our hygiene team  have carried out  a series of visits to local nurseries to provide advanced training for the staff  on various aspects of children's dental health. These visits have been well received with  very positive  feedback from the nurseries involved.   Our hope is that this will be an ongoing campaign both within the practice and the surrounding community. Although  our hygienists are busy in the practice caring for their personal patients each day  they are available to provide training  to your group. Request a visit.

 Whats New?

Many adult patients ask us about the possibility of straightening squint teeth without the need for the "train tracks" that are so fashionable among our teenage patients at the moment. At present the main  options that are available are white brackets instead of silver ones  to make things less visible as favoured by many pop stars or brackets and wires placed on the back of the teeth hidden from view. it should be noted that not everyone is suitable for having brackets placed on the backs of their teeth.

A new system has arrived in the UK from the USA where it has been used for some time. It is called Invisalign and it uses a series of very  thin plastic splints. These are essentially similar to a rugby or hockey mouth guards but much much thinner. They they slowly squeeze the teeth back into the correct position. The splints are almost invisible in use with treatment requiring  the use of  a sequence of trays  over a number of months.   We will bring you more information on this system in future newsletters.

Well that's is for this newsletter we hope you enjoyed it. Please feel free to forward this newsletter to anyone who you think may find it of interest. Do let us know your thoughts on any of the above items too. Thanks  for your continued support and encouragement.

Kind regards

The Craigentinny Dental Health Centre  Team
