A recent article reported
that doctors are now placing ever more importance on the role of long term
inflammation in the body. Originally intended as a defence mechanism for
humans they now believe that in certain cases long term inflammation
can actually cause harm . They believe that chronic inflammation may
play a role in a whole host of diseases including Alzheimer's Disease,
Heart disease and Diabetes. While the exact connection is not yet clear
studies suggest that reducing the levels of inflammation within your
body will make some of these disease less likely. Advice for the
health conscious patient centers round the following
- A diet low in saturated fats ( the
type found in red meat and dairy products)
|
- Replacing these with fish
and vegetable oils
|
- A diet high in fruit and
vegetables, the richer the colour the better.
|
- Red fruit and vegetables
tend to be high in anti-oxidants which mop up free radicals.
Free radicals are found where there is inflammation and are also
thought to play a role in the development of some cancers.
|
- Good dental health including daily
flossing + brushing. Gum disease is one of the most common
sources of long term inflammation affecting 80% of the adult
population to some degree making this aspect of your health more
important than ever.

Ever
wondered why you get decay and your friends and family don't?
|
|
|
Ever wondered why some
people seem to eat whatever they want and get no fillings while you just
need to look at a bar of chocolate for a cavity to appear? Developments in
dental science now allow us in most cases to get to the root of the
problem ( no pun intended…. Honest!) There are up to 8 major factors
that determine how likely you are to experience dental decay. We have
recently introduced a piece of software to the practice that allows us to
examine what is happening in your mouth now from this information
predict how likely you are to experience new tooth decay in future. By
working together and utilizing this programme we can then figure out
the easiest way for you to reduce your future risk of tooth decay.
If you would like to know
more about reducing your risk of tooth decay ask any member of the team.

As
you will now be aware we are moving to a new home later this year.
The new site is located at a building formerly known as “The Turret”
at 57 Duddingston Crescent around 1 mile from the current practice.
We will have additional surgeries to allow us to get to work reducing
waiting times for appointments, a dedicated sterilisation room
designed to facilitate our rigourous cross infection control procedures
and on site car parking for your convenience. The practice has
been designed around the most up to date thinking incorporating ideas from
practices as far a field as Australia, America and more locally Cornwall.
The
team will remain largely the same but with a few new faces to help make
your visits more efficient, more informative and hopefully even more
comfortable . We will as ever be continuing to develop the
preventative dental care we offer to minimize the treatment that you need.
We have been working through an intensive period of additional
training to help with this. We are all really excited by the new
practice although the Partners appear to be sporting more gray hairs
by the day! It is anticipated that the practice will remain open for
business right through out move we will of course keep you informed……
Congratulations
Congratulations
are due to Hygienist Alison Stoddart who recently got engaged.
If you want to hear a tale of true romance ask her to tell you about
“the proposal” at your next visit. You never know it might even stop
her nagging you about flossing for a few minutes!
