Oral Cancer Awareness Week 9th-15th November

Oral cancer is a growing problem in the UK. Last year more than 4000 patients were diagnosed as suffering from mouth cancer. This disease is affecting more patients and younger patients every year. At present,  sadly 1700 people die  annually from this disease usually due to late diagnosis. As part of your regular examination visit we always check for Mouth  Cancer looking under and around your tongue, cheeks, lips and accessible areas of your throat. All of our dentists and hygienist are trained in this. The latest  advice on reducing your risk of developing this problem is listed below;

Avoiding Mouth Cancer

1. Avoid  smoking or chewing tobacco, gutkha/paan

2. Limiting alcohol consumption

3. Having a healthier "low meat, low fat" diet.

4. Where possible  Choose beans, seafood and poultry as alternatives to beef, pork and lamb.

5. Try to eat at 5 portions of  vegetables and fruit everyday

What  to look out for

If you or any member of your family has any of the symptoms below for more than 14 days it is important to come and see us to get things checked out. The symptoms below do not mean that you have oral cancer, indeed  they are usually not related at all, however we can assess things for you and rapidly put your mind at rest.

  • difficulty in chewing or swallowing.
  • a chronic sore throat or hoarse voice that does not heal.
  • red patches in the mouth or on the tongue.
  • white patches in the mouth or tongue.
  • a lump or overgrowth of tissue anywhere in the mouth.

Mouth  Cancer Awareness Week is designed to raise the profile and awareness of mouth cancer. As part of this  we would like to ask you  to consider forwarding this article to any Friends or relatives who might benefit from the information contained here.

Dental First Aid For Children Part 1

Statistics show that more than half of all children will suffer a bump or blow to their teeth at one point or another as they grow up. Thankfully the human body is fairly resilient and most of these incidents result in no permanent damage. However, taking the correct action at the right time is often critical to saving a tooth. This simple guide will make sure that if the worst happens, then your child will have the best chance of the teeth recovering successfully.

Injury to the lips gums or other soft part of the mouth

  • Use a cold compress to reduce any swelling.

  • Bleeding can be controlled with direct pressure using  clean gauze or cotton handkerchief.

  • Bathe the area gently using warm water to remove any loose debris

  • Deep cuts may require a small stitch. Manage any pain with normal child strength analgesics.

  • make an appointment to see the dentist as soon as possible.

Baby tooth knocked out

  • Do not attempt to put the tooth back in its socket

  • Treat the area as per an injury to the lips or gums. Make an appointment to see the dentist as soon as possible.

Baby tooth loose

  • Do not attempt to push  the tooth back in its socket as this may damage the adult successor

  • bathe the area with warm water if there is grit dirt or debris there

  • arrange an appointment with the dentist as soon as possible. usually baby teeth that are loosened in an accident need to be removed.

Practice Happenings

The last few months have been slightly quieter on the practice development front with the team having something of a  breather during the  holiday season. ( I know they will disagree! ed.)  As yet we have no news to update you with on our new premises as we are awaiting a preliminary decision from the Planning Department. As subscribers to the newsletter you will be the first to know.

We are now in preparation  for an intensive training programme involving the whole team which will be run in house over the next 12-18 months. It will help us to focus further on providing modern dental care which is centered around the prevention of dental disease. Our aim is to have a practice filled with healthy patients who need  fewer fillings and share our goal of  achieving "healthy teeth and gums, for life."

Finally this month we welcome back new mum  Evelyn O'Farrell who is  re joining us after her maternity leave.
