Thanks for opening our newsletter. We hope you have had a great summer so far and have enjoyed some of the sunniest days the UK has had for years.

We have lots of tips and hints for you in this issue as well as an update on the goings on at the practice over the last 2 months. If you have been  following Dr Booths articles on how to beat halitosis then this month sees the last article in the series.  With the School holidays coming to an end  we have a list of Snack suggestions that fit well into school lunch packs. What's more they might just help to avoid fillings in the autumn too!

Finally if you want to know how to avoid a dental drama from turning into a crisis read on........

Say Goodbye To Bad Breath Part 3

In the last issue we talked about the 7 types of bad breath that can occur. For detailed information on each of those types visit the Breath Analyser on our web site just click a link below or review or list of top tips.

Constant bad breath     Morning breath     Afternoon or evening breath     Egg breath

Food smell breath        Smoker’s breath   Chemical smell breath

Not sure which one applies to me

Top Tips for avoiding bad breath....

first the obvious.... well we have to really !

1. Daily brushing + flossing of all teeth - see our 4 point plan for prevention

2. Mouthwashes - take advice from the team as to the most appropriate one

3. Regular dental check ups - untreated decay and gum disease both cause halitosis.

4. Drink plenty of water throughout he day- dehydration can cause halitosis particularly from heat in the workplace, stress or jobs where you have to talk a lot.

5. Cut down on coffee and Alcohol, turn the radiator down, if you have to talk a lot take regular sips of water in between and tell your boss that you need to do less work on your dentist’s advice (well it’s worth a try anyway).

6. Use a tongue scraper once per day- you need to really go for the furry bits at the back of your tongue to be effective with this.

7. A Heath Robinson tongue scraper comes in the form of a bent spoon just make sure your work colleagues don't go making tea with it later! (yuk!)  Alternatively  specifically designed tongue scrapers are available. Remember this tip is only applicable to adults or children with direct parental supervision

8. Avoid alcohol based mouthwashes and breath freshening sprays, although they make your mouth feel fresh at the time they will actually just dry your mouth more after an hour or so. They do not treat the problem only mask it temporarily.

9. If you have persistent bad breath that does not respond to the tips here seek professional advice from the dentist, hygienist or your doctor.

Decay Free Snacks For back to School?

Here is our list of top 10 low risk snacks for your family. Why not involve your children in making some of these things? You never know you may have a budding Jamie Oliver or Delia in your family and not even know it. As ever moderation is the key as some of the low risk snacks for decay can have higher fat or salt contents so a good balance is always advisable.

Snacks

  • Rice cakes, oat cakes, crisp breads, breadsticks, mini pitta breads

  • Vegetable  strips - carrots, sweet pepper, celery, cucumber

  • Mini salads - lettuce sweetcorn, mozzarella, pasta, tuna

  • Fresh fruits

  • Nuts, peanuts, pistachios etc Suitable for older children only as they can represent a choking hazard to young children and babies

  • Cheeses - there is whole world of cheeses to choose from now why not let your children choose some new ones to try.

Drinks

  • plain water

  • plain milk

  • why not make your own "diluting juice" with fresh Fruit juiced and diluted at least 1 part to 6 in water. remember not to add any sugar.

Don't let a drama turn into a crisis!

Ever wondered when you should call the practice? How long should you wait to see if something will improve on its own? Here is a short list of the problems patients most commonly encounter and what to do about them.

Sharp pain on hot and cold

if this lasts 2-3 seconds at most and is mild try applying an anti sensitivity toothpaste to the tooth for a few days. If this does not work call the practice.
Sharp Pain on biting if this is short and sharp then it suggests a cracked filling or tooth. Call the practice within 10 days of this symptom developing
If a tooth breaks or a filling is lost Lost fillings cannot be left for more than 7-10 days without a serious risk of the tooth becoming irreversible infected. Call the practice within this timescale if at all possible.
Dull ache lasting 20 minutes or more This is most often a sign of a nerve dying within a tooth or a more serious problem. This type of problem usually needs immediate attention within 12-24 hours.

Finally  on this subject though we hope you never need the advice. In any situation where you have dental discomfort we would like to be your first point of contact. However if circumstances  temporarily prevent this  Ibuprofen is the best medicine to take for dental related discomfort. It is anti inflammatory and will work better than most other available medicines. Always read the label though as some medical conditions preclude its use.

Practice Happenings

As you may well be aware the practice is currently searching for a new larger home. We are not looking too far away from our present site and hope to have some ideas finalised in the next few months. The new practice will be a bit larger to allow us to cut waiting times for appointments and provide and exciting range of additional preventative services. We will as ever keep you up to date on our  progress.

Finally congratulations to Michelle who turned 21 this month! Michelle held a party  in her home town of Peterhead which was attended by a committed band of party enthusiasts from the practice. A great evenings entertainment  was had by all.

We also congratulate Louise on successfully achieving her Dental Radiographers Qualification. This means that she is now able to take the full range of x rays that previously only dentists and hygienists were able to. This is one of the most demanding courses that dental nurses can take and involved many weeks of hard work on Louises part. The entire team are proud of her achievement.
