This issue of the newsletter sees a slight change in
format after last months e-mail address debacle. As promised steps have
been put in place to avoid a repeat of the same problem. Let us know what
you think of the new format.
Following on from the Lick Test last month we have a
follow up article which poses some interesting questions with surprising
answers and hopefully will explain a bit more about the real causes of
Halitosis. We also have an article on a new service at the practice
and the chance to cause serious damage to your bathroom cabinet! Confused?
Read on.
Best wishes

Say
Goodbye To Bad Breath
Part 2
|
|
|
For regular readers of our
newsletter I’m sure that most of you have already tried the lick test
that was described in the last newsletter. For new subscribers don’t
worry you haven’t stumbled onto the ice cream tester homepage for Hagen
Daas! (Simply click
here to find out more.) If you are not keen on what you smell
then you may need to indulge in a little tongue cleansing (more anon).
However, for a variety of different reasons bad breath is often more
difficult to pin down at different times of the day and for different
people so a negative lick test might not be enough to confirm that you don’t
have bad breath at other times! |

No one is particularly good
at smelling their own breath as our nasal receptors become used to, and
then stop registering, smells that they are exposed to for prolonged
periods. There are discreet hand held monitors that can be purchased
cheaply that are very accurate at detecting some (but unfortunately not
all) of the chemicals in bad breath. Unfortunately, the best device at
detecting bad breath is right under your nose.
If you think you may have
bad breath then the best (but sometimes hardest) thing to do is to ask
someone in the family or a friend to use their nostrils to confirm your
fears. If that prospect is too embarrassing then ask your dentist to check
for you. |

Answers.......
-
Bad
breath comes from the stomach: false
this occurs in only a small number of people with very obscure medical
conditions.
-
Bad
breath comes from the lungs: false,
again this occurs only very rarely
-
Mouth
rinses cure bad breath: false, mouth
rinses, by themselves, will only mask bad breath without getting rid
of the problem. Very often the mouthwash will in fact make the problem
worse rather than better due to high levels of alcohol which dry the
mouth. Only two types of mouth rinse are useful in addition to
professional care when treating bad breath: To find out which two ask
a member of the team.
-
Various
types of breath freshening sprays can be used to cure bad breath: false,
such sprays will only mask the smell for a short time rather like
using perfume or after shave to mask body odour.
-
Anyone
who thinks that they have bad breath does: false,
the fear of having bad breath is recognised in some individuals who
may not have bad breath at all. This can be quite debilitating for
those suffering from it and cannot readily be treated by a dentist.
The
real causes of bad breath are quite varied but when you look at the types
of bad breath that exist it starts to get easier to home in on the exact
problem and more importantly the solution. |

The 7 main types of bad
breath are
-
Constant bad breath
-
Morning breath:
breath is worse on waking but then improves as the day progresses.
-
Afternoon or evening
breath: your breath is worse as the day progresses
-
Egg breath
-
Food smell breath
-
Smoker’s breath
-
Chemical smell breath
and in the next issue we
will give you a whole host of tips that you can use at home to
help combat each of these types of bad breath. So if you feel that there
is a problem then do a a quick bit of homework before the next
newsletter and see if you can figure out which type of bad
breath you have. If you can't wait that long you can always e-mail
us for our fact sheet on fresh breath.

Whats
New?

Everywhere we look in the papers and magazines at the
moment there are articles on tooth whitening and cosmetic dentistry. As a
result, we have been asked many questions about tooth whitening or
changing the appearance of smiles.
Our digital cameras have proved very useful capturing
photographs where we can actually discuss your likes and dislikes in your
smile on the screen right in front of you. However a recurrent problem has
been that patients are understandably worried about what their teeth will
look like after any aesthetic or cosmetic treatment. We now have a solution to this problem.
Our team are now able to take a photograph of your smile
and using digital imaging show you a simulated result of tooth whitening
or reshaping. This is possible without having to touch your teeth at
all.
This system has already helped several people to
decide whether or not to proceed with cosmetic treatment and is just
another tool that can be used in providing you with the most up to date
dental care.
We believe in providing our patients with a full range
of options before carrying out any treatment and cosmetic options should
be no different. As part of this commitment to informed dentistry we will
now make this service available at no charge, to all of our patients who
wish to consider cosmetic options, just ask your dentist at your next
visit.

Congratulations
to Dr Wasiak who has recently completed the third and final part of her
M.F.D.S. qualification. This qualification is in addition to the degrees
in dentistry and behavioural psychology that Alex already has. It has
taken 2 years , 3 sets of exams and many hours of hard study to complete
however Aleks has passed each stage of the process first time. The entire
team send their congratulations. Aleks can be found looking for a bigger business
card to hold all of her qualifications.
