Orthodontic
treatment, sometimes called braces allows the teeth to be bodily moved
into the correct position. This allows the dentist to align your teeth up
as close to their ideal positions as possible. The major advantage to
orthodontic treatment is that you do not need to drill away healthy tooth
to make room for crowns of veneers which are other common ways of creating
a more pleasing smile. For this reason the orthodontic treatment option is
often considered to be more conservative and slightly kinder to the teeth.
Orthodontics
used to be considered as something for children only however with the
advent of new techniques all this has changed in recent years.
In the past
fixed orthodontic treatment ( often referred to as train tracks) used
metal wires and metal brackets that were bonded to the teeth. These gently
pushed and pulled the teeth into the correct position.
Modern
dentistry has ceramic or plastic brackets that are tooth coloured so
that all that is seen is a thin metal wire running round the teeth.
If even this is too much it is sometimes possible for the brackets to be
fixed to the back of the teeth where they will not be seen at all.
A final
option for orthodontic treatment is a new system called
Invisalign. This
uses clear plastic retainers to gradually squeeze the teeth into position.
Although a highly complex process is used to manufacture these Invisalign
braces, they are very simple for the patient to wear. These have the
advantage of being, almost totally invisible in use and are
removable for eating.
