This
type of bad breath is much more apparent in those people with a bacterial
build up on the very back of their tongue although other areas can also be
responsible. The smell will often be much worse when the mouth is also
dry.

The
hand held personal monitors described previously do NOT routinely detect
this smell.
It
is frequently caused by a phenomenon known as post-nasal drip: which many
people say makes them need to swallow frequently as they become aware of
material gathering at the back of their throat. This material is in fact
mucus that drips from your nasal sinuses onto the back of your tongue.
Bacteria at the back of the tongue can then have a high old time feeding
on the mucus to produce their very distinctive aroma.
Post-nasal
drip is very difficult to treat successfully although your doctor might be
able to refer you to an Ear Nose and Throat department in more severe
cases. Having a dry mouth will make all forms of bad breath worse so refer
to Afternoon or evening
breath to find out how you can remedy this problem. The only other way to
deal with this type of bad breath is to practice some very thorough tongue
cleansing which you should really chat over with your dentist.
