Kids Area  Tooth Trivia

Here are some of the more bizarre facts about teeth that you might not have heard before.

1.Here are some unusual remedies used for dental problems in the past. Please don't be tempted to try these out at home.
  • Cure toothache by applying this mixture to a corresponding shoulder: figs, saffron, mustard seed, and plaster of myrrh.
  • For a toothache, boil earthworms in oil and use the oil as eardrops.
  • For tooth decay, rinse with a mouthwash made by boiling dogs' teeth in wine.
  • To make loose teeth firm, tie a frog to your jaws.

2. When were toothbrushes invented?

  • Originally toothbrushes were developed in China around 1500. The bristles were made from natural bristles such as horse, and badger hair.
  • The toothbrushes we use today with nylon bristles were invented in 1938

3. Believe It or Not!

In the dark ages, superstitions  held that a person could cure his/her toothache or re-grow a lost tooth by obtaining a tooth from someone else. This tooth should preferably come from a  hanged criminal. It was believed that just the mere possession of such a tooth would work.

4. Did you know...

China has an annual Love Your teeth Day which is on the 20th of September. It is aimed at promoting oral health among the entire population of 1.2 billion people.
